A Bosnian Muslim boy searches new open graves for the coffin of his relative, which was prepared for a mass burial at the Memorial Center in Potocari, near Srebrenica July 10, 2012. The bodies of 520 recently identified victims of the Srebrenica massacre will be buried on July 11, the anniversary of the massacre when Bosnian Serb forces commanded by Ratko Mladic slaughtered 8,000 Muslim men and boys and buried them in mass graves, in Europe’s worst genocide since World War Two. It’s Been 13 Years Since Columbine

For a few horrific hours in Littleton. Colo., last week, the school outcasts finally had all the power- and they weilded it without mercy or reason.  As scores of students barricaded themselves in classrooms and closets, praying for deliverance, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold casually decided which of their classmates should live and which should die.

100 Elephants were machined gunned down for their tusks in Chad, Africa. Tusks are carved from the skulls, then shipped in normal luggage to China’s extremely fast growing black market.

Big Life Foundation was founded by one man in 2010, Nick Brandt, a photographer and whom I consider an inspirational hero. Nick’s organization has had incredible successes in protecting elephants and their ecosystems in national parks throughout Kenya and other parts of Africa. For example,

Within three months of being established, BIG LIFE has succeeded in breaking up the worst of the three main gangs operating along the Amboseli region Kenya/Tanzania border. This great success could not have been possible without the generosity of our donors who helped us purchase critical vehicles and equipment, hire anti-poaching teams, and develop our network of informers and associates.

In addition to poaching, drought and agriculture are threatening the species. Most of the ecosystems and land areas that Big Life works in are being impacted by climate change. For more on climate impacts, go here.

We are so fortunate to be walking the earth with these giants. If only we could show them some respect.

U.S. soldiers pose over a mass grave trench with some of the 300 bodies of innocent Native American Lakota Sioux, two-thirds women and children, massacred at Wounded Knee, Pine Ridge Reservation. One of the few survivors of the massacre was a baby girl, found 4 days after the massacre, lying beneath her mothers dead frozen body, her mother having protected her in death as she had in life. The baby girl, having survived the massacre and the blizzard with temperatures at 40 below zero, was then abducted by Brigadier General Colby as a trophy of the massacre, in his own words “a most interesting Indian relic”. via tapiocasunrise
